We relate to the Psalms because David gives voice to the emotions we all experience – sadness, grief, anxiety, joy, wonder, and praise. Our souls sing out, too. Deep within us is a longing for our Creator, and when we worship, our souls respond with praise. In Psalm 8, David turns his attention to creation. Look around you. Look at the beauty and majesty of the world God has made. Sit quietly beneath the stars and consider the vastness of the heavens. In the wonder of creation, we are reminded that there is a God – and then comes the astonishing question: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them?” We seem so small beneath an infinity sky, yet God sees us. More than that, He created humanity in His own image. Creation was not random or accidental. It was intentional, purposeful, and filled with meaning. Humanity was given a unique place within it, invited to partner with God in His kingdom and to care for what He has entrusted to us. That stewardship reaches far beyond the world around us. We are called to be faithful with our resources, our finances, our relationships, and one another. As Jesus reminds us in the story of the Good Samaritan, caring for God’s creation also means caring for God’s people. Psalm 8 reminds us of something our souls need to remember: you were created on purpose, and you were created for a purpose. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
