Our lives are precious to us. We organize so much of what we do around preserving, improving, and enjoying our lives. We go to the doctor because we want better health, we work to make life more comfortable, and we plan for the future because we value the life God has given us. But Psalm 63 confronts us with a remarkable truth: God’s love is better than life itself.
Just as our bodies were intricately designed to need water, our spirits were designed to need God. We can substitute other things for a time, but nothing else truly satisfies the thirst within us. The world continually tempts us to believe that success, possessions, relationships, entertainment, or comfort can fill the place that belongs to God – but only He can truly satisfy the soul.
So where is our focus? David shows us the answer: seek God, remember God, meditate on God, and praise God. Even in the wilderness, even when trouble comes one thing after another, we can lift our eyes to Him. Jesus reminds us that the Son of Man was lifted up so that those who believe in Him might have eternal life.
What we think about reveals what matters to us. Our minds may be filled with many things, but we meditate on what we value most. God invites us to make Him the focus of our daily rhythm – to keep looking to Him, speaking of Him, and worshiping Him. When we lift Him up, we remember where our hope comes from and who sustains us.
Life may take us through valleys, but God is still more valuable than the life we are trying so hard to preserve. When God becomes our greatest treasure, we can face whatever comes because we know that in Him we have something better than this life: eternal life with Him.
